Press Release

Profanely Divine:
DhamiBoo Art Auction to Benefit the St. James Infirmary: Sunday, June 18, 2006

Take a dash of Van Gogh, a pinch of Grandma Moses, a jigger of Spirit, mix in some phallic worship, throw in a bit of gay sensibility, shake very well indeed, and you end up with the art of DhamiBoo (rhymes with mommy boo) aka Rob Turnbull.  A self taught , San Francisco artist, DhamiBoo shares his unique spirit and world view through folksy watercolors, vibrant acrylics, and shroud-like rubbings. "Every thing is Divine, if you choose to see it that way!", he says. And the corollary, "Everything is phallic if you look at it right!" shines through in many of his works.

A unique soul, DhamiBoo grew up a naive suburban boy on the East Coast.  After pursuing the requisite college education of suburbia, he broke out of the mold to follow his boyhood dream of farming by selling his car and buying a horse and plow. After seven years of farming and traveling with his faithful horse, Emma, he "came out" to and in San Francisco. As he embraced his sexuality, he enthusiastically explored the world of sex work, porn,  and escorting. The healing aspects of sex work evolved into developing a healing practice based on Reiki, a Japanese energy healing modality. . He currently vagabonds about the world, worshiping the occasional phallus, teaching and practicing Reiki. In 2001, he picked up some watercolor pencils, and began depicting some of his experience and unique perspective on life. His art has been shown locally at City Art Cooperative Gallery and at Sacred Profanities in Berkeley. Examples of his art are online at http://www.dhamiboo.com/artwork.html.

He shares his celebration of his life with folksy farm scenes, celestial sex scenes, and a new line of penis and body rubbings. His sense of humor often shows through. In The Sun Just Coming over the Horizon, and The Sun Just Coming Over the Hill, the Sun God shares his orgasm with celestial bodies.  Other paintings such as Haying and Raking Oats/Pea Hay show the peaceful  farm and country life. The two themes converge in Hard Plowing with shows two farm hands hard at it while the plow horses watch. In his new series of rubbings, DhamiBoo captures his reverence for the male form in images that remind one of the shroud of Turin with a phallic twist, combining the realm of Sex with that of Spirit. The paintings are colorful, and the rubbings, serene. And within them all pervades a strong sense of reverence for life and, oft times, penises.

Come see the full spectrum in this auction benefiting San Francisco’s premier clinic for sex workers, the St. James Infirmary (http://stjamesinfirmary.org/) with partial proceeds: 1598 Fulton Street @ Lyon, San Francisco, on Sunday, June 18, 1-5pm. Paintings, prints, and rubbings will be auctioned off. The event is free, and  the works, for sale. Call 484.832.8822 or see www.dhamiboo.com/artwork.html for more information.
